Hivernage

Hivernage, Marrakech

Upscale residences right between the Medina and Guéliz.

Developed from the early 20th century onward as a wintering district — its name comes from the European 'hivernants' who used to spend the season there — Hivernage sits at the hinge between the historic Medina and modern Guéliz. Today it's home to Marrakech's grand hotels, well-regarded restaurants, and a discreet but very real nightlife.

The district stands out for its wide tree-lined avenues, gardens, and lower building density than downtown: expect residences and small buildings with a shared pool rather than large standalone villas. It's a deliberate compromise between residential calm and being minutes from everything — Jemaa el-Fna and the souks are a walk or a short taxi ride away, and Guéliz is just as close.

Hivernage particularly suits travelers who want to enjoy Marrakech without depending on a car, while coming home each evening to a greener, calmer setting than the heart of the Medina.
