Médina, Marrakech
In the heart of the historic city, among souks and riads.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, the Medina is Marrakech's historic core, ringed by ochre pisé ramparts largely dating from the 12th-century Almohad period. It's home to the Koutoubia Mosque and its nearly 77-meter minaret, visible from much of the city, and to the ever-buzzing Jemaa el-Fna square, alive from morning until late at night.
The district is a maze of narrow alleys (derbs) hiding traditional riads, souks organized by trade — dyers, tanners, ironworkers, carpet sellers — and small squares where everyday Moroccan life meets tourism. Staying here means trading quiet and car access (most alleys are pedestrian-only) for total immersion.
It's the natural choice for a first trip to Marrakech, or for travelers who want to experience the city from the inside — spices and calls to prayer included — rather than watch it from the edges.
